Lectors proclaim the word of God to the assembled faith community. They are not merely reading, but are proclaiming God's word. The lector is a leader who must be immersed in what is being proclaimed; knowing the characters, times and places. They assist with bringing to life God's word to those listening; not as Bible history, but as the story that gives meaning to our lives. This is no easy task and requires preparation, articulation, and prayer. Also, they usually carry the Book of the Gospels in the procession and assist in reading the prayers of the faithful. This ministry is challenging yet can be powerful to both the assembly being nourished by the word of God and the proclaimer acting as God's mouthpiece during the liturgy.
