Cantors have an extremely important role in the Vatican II Catholic Church and must possess a multitude of skills in order to be effective. They proclaim the Word of God in the Responsorial Psalm and strive to encourage the participation of the faithful in song and prayer. Skills needed include musicianship skills (the ability to read music), ability to lead yet not dominate the assembly in congregational singing, knowledge of Psalms, and an overall understanding of the Mass and the function of music within its context. Rehearsing with the accompanists and Director of Liturgy is expected for this ministry area, which includes the ability to take direction.
